For months I've read comments on survivalist forums about a major increase in demand for seeds and gardening implements. Here is evidence from the media:

This article is almost a year old, dating from the time the economy began to take an obvious turn for the worse.
I can't see any downside to learning how to produce your own food, unless the opportunity cost is too steep. If you have the time and space, why not try your hand at gardening or at least planting a fruit tree?
